AI Tool Comparisons
Two tools at a time, compared on the differences that actually change your decision — not on feature checklists.
Most comparison pages online exist to route you toward whichever product pays the most for the click. These do not. Nobody has paid to appear here, no link on this site earns a commission, and there is nothing for sale — how the site is funded is set out on the pricing page.
You will not find a winner declared at the top of any of these. Two serious tools usually differ by suiting different work rather than by one being better, so each comparison ends with which situation points at which tool, and says plainly when the honest answer is that either would do. Where a tool is genuinely weaker at something, that is stated rather than softened.
These are independent write-ups based on documented behaviour and ordinary use, not laboratory tests — we run no benchmarks and publish no scores, because a number we could not defend would be worse than no number. Features, models, and pricing change frequently, so every page treats the official site as the authority on current details and shows when the underlying tool write-up was last checked.
The tool write-ups behind these comparisons were last checked between and today. Each comparison shows its own dates at the foot of the page.
The comparisons
Cursor vs GitHub Copilot
One replaces your editor and works across many files at once; the other plugs into the editor you already use. The real difference is how much you have to review.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT
One shows its sources by default, the other decides mid-answer whether to search. The difference is disclosure, and what a citation does and does not prove.
NotebookLM vs ChatGPT
One answers only from the documents you upload, the other from everything it learned. Refusing to go beyond your sources removes most invention — and adds a different limit.
Zapier vs n8n
Hosted simplicity against self-hostable control. Worth reading before you assume you need your automations running on your own infrastructure.
Midjourney vs DALL-E
A dedicated image tool you subscribe to, against generation inside a conversation you are already having. They differ most in how you iterate.
Comparing something else
The AI Tools Directory covers every tool on this site individually, each with what the free tier actually includes, where the tool falls short, and who should skip it — which is most of what a comparison would tell you anyway. If two tools you are weighing up are both listed there and no comparison exists yet, tell us and it becomes a candidate for the next one.
